Anger Management Techniques: A Few Quick Helpful Tips To Manage Anger

by Emil Raal on November 12, 2009

People who get angry over the least little thing need to learn anger management techniques to gain control of their emotions. Holding in anger is bad for overall health and if it is unleashed it can be harmful to others.

Studies have shown that those who hold in their anger have a tendency to suffer greater health problems such as depression, colds, high blood pressure, heart attack, digestive problems, anxiety and the flu than those who know how to manage their anger in productive ways

The majority of anger management techniques are very easy to learn and follow.

Question the Source of Anger

When tempers flare a great anger management technique for people to use is to ask themselves what the source of their anger and irritation are. This will allow time for the circumstances that caused the anger in the first place to subside. Also they will also be able to question how they would feel if things were turned around and the anger was expressed towards them. This technique will help control emotions before an outburst occurs.

Walk it Off Anger

Sometimes in the work or home environment certain situations can cause emotions to stir. When this is felt a good technique is to simply get up and walk out of the room and take a short brisk walk to calm down. Leaving the room and counting to ten before speaking is also very effective. It allows time for calming down and thinking about the situation before lashing out.

Think Peacefully

Another effective anger management technique is replacing angry thoughts and images with serene images, a peaceful setting such a beach or sunset or to think of happier times such as a wedding, a memory from your childhood or a vacation. When the mind is at peace it is very difficult to express anger.

The Use of Positive Self -Talk

A powerful technique is using positive inner dialogue which is known as self-talk.  It is very normal for people to think inwardly using phrases such as “I will never be able to get this project done on time!” This is negative thinking, but it can be easily turned around. For example one could tell themselves the following “I can complete this project on time if I calm down and concentrate.”

When anger management techniques are used generally anger is better controlled.
